The Problem With Science.

The problem with the scientific method is that it is driven far too much by theory, and not enough by fact. By which I mean that science moves forward by the development, and subsequent testing, of hypotheses, when at times formation of hypotheses should be strenuously avoided-- because they grow into filters which taint otherwise vital and compelling data.
Science is not comfortable with unknowns. (You thought nature abhorred a vaccuum? Nature's got nothing on science.) So rather than leave a question unanswered (e.g., "How old is mankind?"), science tends to fill in the vaccuum by providing an answer, based on the theory that can obtain the greatest consensus.
The problem arises when these theories and hypotheses become mental constructs-- it is a short hop in the collective consciousness from "the theory supported by the most scientists" to "scientific fact". New data that falls outside these constructs (that is, data which "flies in the face of accepted scientific wisdom!") are assumed to be anomolous, and are tossed aside; data that supports, fits the constructs is sought out and embraced.
Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes often described his detection method as scrupulously collecting facts, while AVOIDING the formation of theories. Keep collecting facts-- without the blind spots imposed by hypotheses-- until you have ruled out all possibilities but one. That remaining possibility, no matter how improbable, is the one true possibility.
I think Cremo has been a bit dramatic in characterizing science as conspiratorial, and it is understandable how the anthropologist (below) could take umbrage. It is not so much "cloak-and-dagger" conspiracy at play, but rather a very tangible limit on-- and flaw in-- the scientific method. That flaw is the need to develop consensus theories to explain the unexplained (rather than leaving a question unknown), and the subsequent phenomenon that these theories become constructs for filtering all new data.
Given that the world is flat, what do you do with evidence that the world is round? Well, you ignore it. Not because you are a conspirator. But because you accept as a given that the world is flat, and that colors your perception of any relevant-- or contrary-- data.

Read and think before you fight for your views

"Forbidden Archeology's Impact" might be said more appropriately to be a large dossier of letters, papers and documents written by the author and by a great number of people wishing to comment - among other things - on his and Richard Thompson's research into archeological papers containing evidence for extreme human antiquity. The author obviously had no intention of intertwining these textual elements into a cohesive woof, so readers should not expect the book to develop any central argument. Such an argument, however, is to be found in "Forbidden Archeology - The Hidden History of the Human Race" whose intellectual and social impact the present book is intended to register (thus, the dossier-format of this book - and not its contents - explains why I have given it no more than three stars).
Readers interested in the issues of human origins (for which archeologists have unearthed quite a bit of puzzling evidence) and the sociology of scientific knowledge (particularly as applied to Paleo-anthropology and Archeology) should hurry up and acquire the extremely well-written and painstakingly researched "Forbidden Archeology - The Hidden History of the Human Race" (914 pages). Readers will also benefit from a perusal of the customer reviews posted on the respective Amazon.com page. Many of them (excepting my own) are beautifully argumented.
However, the implications of a deep-rooted belief in Darwinism, the unavoidable practice of peer reviews for scientific journals, the few well-known cases of evidence suppressed or twisted by academic institutions, and the utterly subjective nature of all sciences which pretend to account for our true nature and raison d'être, have given rise to a very heated debate on the possible existence of worldwide conspiracies and powerful groups of mischievous academicians. Such debates, though they must happen, often lead our attention away from the intellectual revision required by discoveries such as those discussed in Cremo and Thompson's "Forbidden Archeology - The Hidden History of the Human Race". Of course, there's no denying that conspiracies and falsifications of History have occurred and may still occur (sometimes even providentially!), but I think readers should be careful not to get caught up too much in the unwholesome anxiety such speculations are prone to produce.
Conspiracy is not at all at the heart of the matter, so instead of loitering in a state of indignation and fingerpointing, non-zealots would do better in calmly concentrating on two essential facts: 1) There really is a large bulk of acceptable evidence, both archeological and anthropological, for anatomically modern humans living in very remote times, and 2) there is not one example in the fossil record nor a single logical or scientific basis for the claim that animal or plant species can or did create themselves or could ever transform themselves into completely new forms.
Cremo's work has helped expose the fragility and inconsistency of currently favored theories on human evolution, and so has taken an important step towards a new understanding of the discipline of Anthropology. So maybe it really is time we gave up our unintelligible, mechanistic evolutionary models and started taking the wisdom of our forefathers a bit more seriously.

I am a person who has seen both sides of who,what,and when in anthropology and archeology. I Practiced true skeptism and felt the backlash of the mainstream scientist to other credible evidence. I say this book is the reality check needed by anyone interested in both sides of the story. Highly recommended. Very truthful. I've been there!!

About the Author
Janet Gonzalez-Mena has been involved in Early Childhood Education since the beginning of Head Start in the 1960’s. The appeal of this text is that it inspires you to the best advocator for children. The contents are an easy read with relevant information within the social cultural theory that we Early childhood educators are required to understand and work to.

Very easy to read, no jargon

I like how this book was written. The author avoids jargon so you can really focus on what you are reading rather than trying to remember what the "big words" mean. Its easy to read and you can pretty much breeze right through it. I like it. I am reading it for a child development class and so far its worth it.

A Book On Family Centered-Learning

Known for the "diamond standard" for infants and toddlers (i.e. INFANTS, TODDLERS, AND CAREGIVERS), Gonzalez-Mena shows her diversity with this solo-written text on the family aspect of early care and education.

Like her other text, Gonzalez-Mena prefers content over presentation which, in her case, is as right as rain. As usual, she eschews color pictures and innovative, dazzling graphic organizers in favor of outstanding pieces of knowledge (i.e. her nugget on working with families on guidance and disicipline on Page 171).

I love her approach because you get much more packed into a volume (for only 60 or so dollars) than you get in splashier books like, for example, Couchenor's family involvement book or Olsen/Fuller's text.

Not ordered well.

Says "covering every period and development.." but doesn't give consistant examples. Say, you're looking for a Baroque chair, you might find some Baroque furniture under the article Baroque, and some chairs under the article Chair, but you might not find any baroque chairs. When I got this book, I thought I could use it to do some period research but it was very difficult to find what I wanted, if at all, and it wasn't what I was hoping for and expecting unfortunately.

Good but dated content deserves a new revision

This book is just what I was looking for: Illustrated descriptions of styles and terms used for furniture. If you want to know what terms like "cabriole" mean (for which you really need illustrations), this is probably the right book for you. I say "probably" because The Encyclopedia of Furniture was originally published in 1938 and the current edition was revised almost 50 years ago. Given that most of the material is historical, that's not as bad as it sounds

The Encyclopedia of Furniture would benefit greatly from the better editorial and production values that computerized compilation methods have made possible. (Unfortunately, most publishers--reflecting the ownership of many by huge multinational media corporations--are more interested in how fast they can publish than whether the material is comprehensive or even factually correct.)

Following are examples of the kinds of problems that could be eliminated with some editorial direction and modern production techniques (which will also give you an idea of what's covered by The Encyclopedia of Furniture):

--The criteria for deciding what or who deserves an entry aren't clear. For example, an entry appears for William Morris but none for Breuer or Thonet. And does James Gillingham (an 18th century Phila. furniture maker whose name isn't identified with a chair or any other piece of furniture) warrant more space than either of these?
--It appears that only photographic plates are numbered, but line drawings don't always appear adjacent to the text they illustrate. Because there are 1800+ illustrations, this can create confusion. For example, to what do the unlabeled line drawings numbered a-e at the top of col. 1, p. 389 refer (none of the text appearing on pages 388-389 appears to reference these).
--The illustrations don't always appear with the most appropriate entry. For example, there's no illustration for KNEEHOLE but illustrations of kneehole desks appear under both DESK and ENGLAND.
--The means of illustration are also sometimes inappropriate. PERIOD FURNITURE (p. 336) is illustrated by a hand-drawn timeline whereas it should have been typeset---or perhaps the timeline (which certainly deserves space in this encyclopedia) belongs someplace else.
--In some places (e.g., the heavily illustrated ENGLAND section) the illustrations sometimes don't even fit the printed page (they just kind of slide off the end).
--INTAGLIO (p. 262) references illustration 32, which is a Queen Anne armchair. Does this mean that the three-toed DRAKE FOOT of the chair leg is an example of intaglio? The entry is vague, and so is the illustration.
--Running heads and folios are essential but are sometimes missing just where they are needed most (e.g., the lengthy ENGLAND section).

This great reference is most deserving of an extensive, up-to-date revision.

I gave away this book as soon as I got it. It is more a dictionary than an encyclopaedia, it has a dreadful design and the information is badly organised. The photos look as if they had been copied and pasted from the Internet. The book is crowded and unappealing. I browsed some of the entries and are very general, and you might find similar info on the web. The only think good wast the price, but as I gave it away as soon as I got it, it turned out to be expensive.

To this "floating world" came the hedonists and the sensual pleasure hunters of old Japan. Many myths and legends encircled the secrets of the Yoshiwara, and still do. In time other Japanese cities tried to copy the original, sometimes even calling their district for geishas and courtesans and pretty waitress girls a Yoshiwara.

Stephen and Ethel Longstreet use prints and fascinating original sources to trace the rise and fall of this city within a city, a sanctioned preserve of teahouses and brothels that was not abolished until 1958, sketching a vivid, no–holds–bared portrait of social and sexual more in Japan's capital.

Lust will not keep. Something must be done about it

It is amazing to me that a place like the Yoshiwara actually existed. An island of sensual pleasure surrounded on all sides by a moat, the only entrance way being through the guarded gates. At the gates, all weapons and social status were checked, and inside was a different realm where the only significant status was the amount of coin you carried, where peasant could pass drinking cups to a lord on one side and a priest on the other, and everything you could see was for sale; it was only a matter of negotiating the price. When you hear stories of the Yoshiwara, if you are a moralist you are filled with deep disgust, but if you tend to the hedonistic side of life you are filled with a bitter envy that such a paradise no longer exists.

Authors Stephen and Ethel Longstreet seem to fall somewhat in between the two sides. Longtime collectors and commentators on art (Stephen Longstreet wrote the various "Drawings of..." Master Draughtsman Series , such as Drawings of Raphael and Drawings of Goya ) they amassed a collection of ukiyo-e woodblock prints dealing with the Nightless City of the Yoshiwara, where the finest artists of Japan made their home.

Written in 1970, "Yoshiwara: Geishas, Courtesans, and the Pleasure Quarters of Old Tokyo" compiles all that the Longstreets have learned during their collecting, which includes manuscripts and tourist guides written during the height of the Yoshiwara. As collectors of erotica, the Longstreets seem to have a hedonistic streak themselves, although the language of the book is tinged with words like "perversions" and "sins," one senses that they admired more than condemned the society that created and approved of an island whose sole permanent inhabitants were prostitutes and their keepers.

The Longstreets share their insight, quoting long passages from these ancient manuscripts and tourists guides in an attempt to give you an honest look at the Yoshiwara, what it was and also what it was not. They frame a picture of a country that did not know sexual sin, and where it was felt that indulging in physical pleasure was a natural and necessary part of life but one better contained it on a single island rather running rampant. At a time when every aspect of Japanese society was regulated, the Yoshiwara provided the only zone of freedom of indulgence and expression, where the only rules were a prohibition against violence and failing to pay your bill.

All aspects of the Yoshiwara are presented, from the high-ranked courtesans known as the Oiran, or the "Castle Toppers" for their ability to bring down even a Lord with their beauty and abilities, to the non-prostitute Geisha (both male and female) who provided song and dancing entertainment before sending their guests of the final event of the evening. There is the hard life of the low-ranking simple prostitutes, serving the needs of those who could not afford the veneer and fineries that accompanied a night with an Oiran, and open acceptance of homosexuality and lesbianism, of sex toys and bondage games that seem like modern inventions but are as old as time.

The Longstreets do not hide that most of these women were sold by their parents at a young age into the world of the Yoshiwara, but shows us through their diaries that most of them did not despise their profession. The book details the religious practices and dreams of the lovely ladies, and what they dreamed and gossiped about during the day before the customers came. Concepts like sexual shame and romantic love would not appear later when the Americans came in to Japan and were shocked at the openness of what they saw, and forced the Yoshiwara closed.

In fact, the Western letters home are some of the most interesting parts of this book. They are dripping with superiority and condemnation, but also show a familiarity with the Yoshiwara betraying that they were more than simple observers. The biggest difference between the Western societies and Japan was the façade of "morality," where one would condemn in public the very thing that one did in private. Times have not changed very much.

I loved reading "Yoshiwara: Geishas, Courtesans, and the Pleasure Quarters of Old Tokyo." The Longstreets approach is one that is half-scholar, half-ribald storyteller and the mix is just right for the subject. There is probably a more in-depth and scholarly analysis of the citizens of Yoshiwara I have no doubt, but few that are as readable and fun.

And just in case you couldn't tell, I fall firmly in the camp of those filled with bitter, bitter envy...

Interesting but dated

Interesting book with a lot of information about the Yoshiwara area. A lot of stories about the pleasure districts concentrate on the top level - the highly paid and famous geishas while this book covers all aspects including the lowly bathhouse girls.

I did think it was dated though. It was written quite a while ago and you can really tell. The writers compare the morals of Yoshiwara to the "hippies and beatniks" of the US! They seem to swing between celebrating the open sexuality of district to disapproval. Personally, I'd have like a more factual account with less judgement either way.

FUN FUN FUN

This book picks up right where Sticky Notes Part 1 stopped. I loved it as much as part 1. A little more serious but still quite light hearted. Discovered I was correct about why this was going on but was totally blown away to find out who Miss Wazzu was. I highly recommend this book. It is very clean and so much fun.

Funny, yet tender book

I couldn't wait to read this and know how Katherine and Quinn would end up. The book is predictable, somewhat.... but I don't care about that AT ALL. I loved to see how the author worked their relationship and I smiled often throughout this book. Again, the grandmother is precious ! This book is delightful to read. I will recommend this book and this author to others !!

"The fourth edition of this established work follows in the excellent tradition of the previous three editions. It retains the concept of the original, providing technological and economic information on the key building blocks of the chemical industry.
The book is packed with information, much of which cannot easily be found elsewhere, and certainly not in such a readily digestible form. The companies and innivators responsible for the chemistry described are clearly credited, and indeed this volume provides an excellent history of the worldwide bulk organic chemicals industry. Throughout the book the authors indicate potential future developments in the manufacture of these important precursors and intermediates.
The reader frindly format seen in the previous editions is retained, wherein each chapter or subsection is provided with a chemical flow diagram illustrating the interrelationship of the products, these flow diagrams folding aut such that they can be constantly referred to whilst reading the text. In addition, the main text is accompained by a synopsis in the margin, which concisely presents all of the essential points, thus facilitating browsing. The contents are logically and clearly organised, and there are detailed reference lists for each chapter, togehter with an extensive index. About the Author
Professor Hans-J?rgen Arpe studied chemistry at the Christian-Albert-University in Kiel, Germany and where he also received his PhD under guidance of Professor R. Grewe. Hans-J?rgen Arpe commenced his career at the Koninklijke/ Shell-Laboratory in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He then moved to the Shell Research Laboratories near Bonn, Germany, followed by his appoint as Head of the Research Department Aliphatic Intermediates at Hoechst AG, Frankfurt, Germany and Head of the scientific library of Hoechst AG. Professor Arpe was an Honorary Professor at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen, Germany.
