I loved this book. It was one of his best so far. I have four sons and sent them each a copy. It reminded me of how things used to be when parents didn't hover over their children and gave them room to think and act for themselves. It showed a sense of bonding that doesn't always happen in todays families. I can't wait to hear from my sons and get their reactions.

GREAT book!

I think it is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. I would classify it as non-fiction. Am I wrong? The childhood life of Nicholas Sparks: family in itself is an educational read, but in telling the story of the ancient cultures as he traveled from continent to continent was unique. A very enjoyable synopsis of ancient history.

Rosenbaum and Friedman's findings suggest that the future of racial inequality in this country will increasingly isolate Blacks from all other groups. In other words, the “color line” may be shifting from a line separating Blacks from Whites to one separating Blacks from all non-Blacks.

funny, has good moral stories

My 8 year old was introduced to David Williams when a friend of mine bought her Mr Stink. She likes books but is not crazy about reading. She, however, couldn't put down Mr Stink the moment she laid her hand on it. I bought the entire set of David Williams. I have never seen her read so ferociously. She finished the entire set in about 2 weeks, considering she has never read a book thicker than 200 pages before! The books are very engaging, funny, has good moral stories, and teach good lessons. Great books!

It is hard to top Allport's thoughtful and understated erudition as he carefully demolishes many of the prevalent reductionstic fads and fallacies of 20th century psychology. Reading and rereading this book represents time well-spent. What do Gordon Allport, Bob Hope and Drew Carey have in common? Answer: They were Clevelanders.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Beautiful illustrations and a tedious rhyming text add up to disappointment in this counting book. Hulme uses eight-line singsong rhymes to show sea creatures on each double-page spread. Simple examples of addition and subtraction are introduced, and the equation is shown at the bottom of the page. For example, "A stingray digs two sandy clams,/Down on the ocean floor./Then plows around until it finds/ One...two...three...four more./It chews three clams for breakfast/And crunches three for brunch-/So all the clams are gobbled up/And none are left for lunch." At the bottom of the page is the equation: 2 clams + 4 clams - 3 clams - 3 clams = 0 clams. The illustrations of marine life are softly hued; children will enjoy looking at them. There is a description of the animals in the back of the book, but the mathematical concepts are never discussed or explained. There is a great demand for beginning math books, but Sea Sums will only be useful to adults who are willing to spend a lot of time getting young listeners ready for these concepts.

Similar in look and concept to Hulme and Schwartz's Sea Squares (1991), this picture book teaches about creatures of a coral reef and shows addition and subtraction visually as well as verbally and numerically. For example, one spread states, "One lionfish is bristling / With pointed, poison spines; / Two others flutter from a cove / Like feathered porcupines. / Around their faces, frilly fins / Spread like a lion's mane. / When one swims off to find some food, / Two fluffy fish remain. 1 lionfish + 2 lionfish -1 lionfish = 2 lionfish." The illustration on the left-hand page shows all three fish swimming; on the right side, two fish remain, and the other is barely visible as it swims out of sight. Wonderful rhymes paired with exciting illustrations

This is one of my favorite books to read to my children. The rhyming text makes it lyrical to read, while my eye easily wanders over the illustrations, while reading it for the umpteenth time. I recommend it unreservedly, as well as its companion, SEA SQUARES, by the same pair.
