They had only ever learned about budgets and numbers and coupons in a very dry, clinical (boring) way. Initially excited, but ultimately felt like I was being "sold" to. Book is one big advertisement for other products.

I follow Lauren Greutman's blog and have always been inspired by her story. So, I was extremely excited to get my hands on this book, I even pre-ordered it! I loved the first half of the book; getting to know more about her story and the details of the financial crisis she had gotten her family into. It was all so easy to relate to. (Even though it could all be found in blog posts on her blog) I noticed there were a few mentions of her website and the other products she offered. Once we got to the steps, I was really excited. I don't know what I was expecting -- I guess some extremely world changing ideas. Naive of me. The steps are along the same format you would get from any financial course or coach.

What really turned me off from the book and ultimately led to me putting it down at Step 7 was the several plugs for her other products. Each chapter seemed to be an advertisement for her Financial Revolution Community. Frustrated, I started to flip back through what I've read and each chapter had a reference back to her website or contained a URL for a product on her website. I felt like I was being sold to, even though I had already made a purchase. On top of that, I ordered her Financial Planner (for $50!) two months ago, and still haven't received it. So, I will be asking for a refund there.

If you are truly at rock bottom and have NO idea where to turn and have a few dollars on your pocket, it may be worth the purchase. Better yet, wait for it to be released at your local library. Or I will sell you mine. And rather than pay the $129 to join the community; spend $90 and attend a local Financial Peace University class by Dave Ramsey - THAT is life changing.

THIS IS REAL LIFE! Finally, a relatable, practical and proven way to change your habits and get yourself out of debt!

I have to admit, I purchased this with a bit of skepticism. I have read many a budgeting/saving/financial peace book trying to find something that would work for my family. Most are very fact filled, form filled, and rather boring. Its like going to school again and would put me into a "I am likely to fall asleep at my desk as the professor drones on" mood. NOT WITH THIS BOOK!!
I began to flip through pages when I received it. First thing I noticed was that the writing style was casual and easy to read. It was not stiff, clinical, and boring. I had a few minutes to spare, so I sat down to read the first few pages..... suddenly, an hour had passed. It reads THAT easy!
Lauren tells her story from the beginning, telling not just the happy stuff, but the nitty gritty details, emotions, and events that led her to where she is now. There is nothing glamorized in her descriptions. She tells it like it is.
Her story is laid out and reads like she was sitting there with you, telling her story in person. A real person. Speaking directly to you. You see her life unfold with nothing held back or glossed over. I had several "I thought I was the only one" moments as I perused the pages. It is the kind of wake-up call I needed.
What is even better is the straightforward way she presents her method of getting out of debt. Its a no b.s. plan. Its not glossy and flashy. It really makes you look in the mirror and evaluate yourself and your choices. Its real and its not easy and its not pleasant, but it works. It was also something I can share with my finance-a-phobic husband so we can work together.
Her story is empowering. Learning from her is as easy as two friends talking over coffee. There is no feeling like you are being talked down to or patronized because you got yourself in a bind. I finally feel like I found the plan that works for my family and helps me get a handle on our finances.
I cannot say how much I appreciate Lauren & Mark for opening up their lives in order for the rest of us to turn our lives around as well.
This book is a game changer - a life changer!

This book is a big sales pitch!

The first half of this book was interesting though not all that helpful. The author tells the story of how she got into so much debt and glosses over how she got out of debt. She makes a big case for knowing your values and stresses how her values include staying home with her kids (as if my mommy guilt o er working to pay off our debts wasn't high enough).

But what really turned me off about this book is that the second half is an overt upsell. Every single page tells you how great her online community is and how wonderful and supportive the community members are. She gives success story after success story never (of course) telling how many people don't succeed with her program.

I think it's totally disingenuous to sell a book for spenders with the guise of helping them to stop spending - and then make a strong upsell in said book. I wouldn't recommend this book to any spender.

VERY VERY DISSAPOINTED!!! WASTE OF MONEY!!

I AM SORRY BUT I CANNOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS BOOK!!

A Bachelor Still has all the elements of a 5 star Historical Romance, but the author Ms. Lee is in need of a good editor. The story at the beginning is like scrambled eggs. I couldn't make heads or tails of it. The story reads like notes for her final draft. How can all the events leading up to Alexander Courtland 2nd Marquess of Courtland marrying Liana McElreath, the oldest sister of Colin McElreath the Scottish Viscount in bk2 Merely the Groom happen I one day or at most a day and half. In what seems like a 24 hour period Alex located Lord Rothermere 6th Marquess of Rothermere stops him at the alter from marrying Liana, gives sever pathetic excuse for why they shouldn't be married. Then states the 2nd reason is that he was betroth to Liana and present signed marriage contracts and a license. Liana's mother sisters and brothers are at the wedding they have this huge beautiful wedding followed by the elaborate huge wedding breakfast the gifts of gold coins and beautiful crafted jewelry for the attendants and staff are presented. Colin has had the perfect wedding dress made for Liana. She is presented with the Courtland engagement ring and Courtland family jewels. Liana has a perfect wedding gift for Alex given to her by the Duchess to give to him. ITS NOT POSSIBLE TO DO ALL THIS IN A WEEK LET ALONE A DAY PLUS ALL THE TRAVELING. This author just through a bunch of great idea for an excellent story under the bus with lazy unedited sequence of impossible events. SAD!! I will never buy anything by this author again. Buyer Beware!! I fell into the trap because I had read the other books in the series. Oh and who the heck is India? Johnathan Barclay's wife. Is there a story missing? I felt like I just read a story written by a drunk person!!

Rothermere is a evil mean sadistic villain and deserves what he gets. Wait! What about Jonathan?

This story was as cute as the rest, but there is a story missing. Even wishing this book the count is incorrect. "...while they were bachelors, but now, the five of them—Jarrod, Griffin, Colin, Daniel, Jonathan, and Alexander—were married gentlemen ready to settle down and do their duty to king and country..." I count six names and we don't have Jonathan"s story. Three stars for this being the last of what should have been six stories.

A MUST-READ FINALE !!!!

This is the finale to the 'Free Fellow League' and it is fabulous!! I love the last book in a series because it ties up all the loose ends, unravels all the plot twists and gives us a gigantic happy ending. But the last book makes me sad also, since the story is done. The author did a perfect job of unweaving all the webs she wove throughout all five books and the novella. When the characters feel like family and the events make you cry, you know you have stumbled upon an AWESOME series. My congratulations to the author for a job well done. I highly recommend this entire series and the novella, 'Clearly A Couple' (found in 'Talk of the Ton').

an excellent overview of photosynthesis

as a graduate student with a background in physical chemistry and now working in biophysical chemistry, i found this book to be an excellent overview of photosynthesis. blankenship clearly outlines broad topics to be covered in the first chapter then delves into well-organized detail in subsequent chapters. this book was recommended as a reference by my advisor, but i found it so well written that i read nearly the entire book and bought a copy for my own. i'd recommend this book to anyone intersted in photosynthestic mechanisms at the molecular level (including light harvesting, water oxidation, protein structures, and carbon fixation).

Great Book.

Very well written. It has an impressive historic review of photosynthesis. The last chapter on photosynthesis evolution is also very good. I needed to understand the mechanism of light harvesting and the function of antenna and I got the information from this book in a very concise and readable format. It is a must-have book for anybody working on photosynthesis.

The Physics of Photosynthesis

This text presents a physics approach to the understanding of the process of photosynthesis. The basic approach is to view the chlorophyll molecule, with its many different versions, as an antenna. The author is not shy in his use of mathematical equations, even differentials and integrals, but not so much to scare away those biologists not so comfortable with them. An excellent appendix provides readers with background material in the basic physics concepts, including quantum mechanics. Through it all, the author's voice comes through loud and clear, as if he were speaking to you directly. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on the evolution of photosynthesis.

A Straight Forward Read

I'm reading this text for a stylistics course, and I think it is very direct in its description of different methodologies and practices. I may be a biased though as I've already completed sociolinguistics course work, and stylistics and sociolinguistics have similar practices and theoretical perspectives.

The States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) have established the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in order to achieve the object and purpose of the Convention. It aims to ensure the implementation of the CWC’s provisions, including those for international verification of compliance with it, and to provide a forum for consultation and cooperation among States Parties. The aim of this book is to give a comprehensive view of how to internationally verify compliance with the CWC, in principle, using analytical chemistry and related strategies and methods.

There are currently eighteen analytical laboratories that have established capability, and obtained recognized competence in, the analysis of samples for CWC-related chemicals; these laboratories are the OPCW designated laboratories. The majority of the chapters in this book discuss the analytical methods used in these off-site laboratories. The methods discussed are for the identification of target chemicals from environmental and human origin samples. The procedures and strategies for on-site sampling and analysis are also discussed. 

A variety of topics are covered, including:

• the requirements of the CWC for verification, sampling, mobile laboratories and their equipment and software;
• sample preparation from environmental samples;
• official inter-laboratory proficiency tests arranged by the OPCW;
• the OPCW Central Analytical Database (OCAD);
• monitoring of hazardous chemicals;
• analysis strategies and quality assurance;
• analytical methods including gas and liquid chromatography hyphenated with mass spectrometry or other detectors, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis, and the detection of exposure to toxic scheduled chemicals.

This book is aimed at researchers from the fields of environmental and analytical chemistry, and researchers in civil and military laboratories. Thought provoking but lacking something in depth!

The Real State of America: Mapping the Myths and Truths of The United States is an atlas of statistical data pertaining to the USA and how they rate with the rest against the world.

This 128-page book is packed solid with references, maps, graphics, illustrations, essays and statistics. It explores the myths and the realities of Americans living in the 21st century.

Topics include the wage gap, the economy, export/imports, marriage/divorce, foreclosures/homelessness, the environment, nuclear arms, climate change and so much more. Each shows the reader, in detail, the percentage of Americans who are affected and how they rate globally.

The Real State of America breaks this information down into rates for men, woman, by nationality, age et cetera and shows how each group combines to make up the statistics. Most of the facts and figures are up-to-date, with many of the reports from 2008-2010.

Cynthia Enloe is a Research Professor from Clark University and in 2010 she was awarded the Howard Zinn Lifetime Achievement Award in Peace studies. Joni Seager is a Professor and Chair of Global Studies at Bentley University, has several books accredited to her as well as, working with the UN and UNESCO in further world benefiting projects.

These two women have collected all the data that you will find within these pages and have presented it by an easy-to-follow method. Their aim is to bring further awareness to the decline of the "American Dream" and discredit the myth involving the "Land of Opportunity".

What does it really mean to live in the United States of America? This book will explain the transaction between cultural, material and ideological relationships in such things as religion; military; healthcare and its politics; big business and the economic flows of wealth and debt both globally and locally.

Mapping, it is believed, is a tool that can display and analyze patterns of similarity and difference to enable political debate. With over 40 topics addressing information-rich subjects, The State of America will ensure conversation and discussions.

After reading this book, I found myself sharing the conclusions with others, marking this as a definite conversation-starter. It shares a wealth of data and I found it interesting how it was cross-referenced with the globe. I was surprised to see how Canada stacked against the USA and found it highly informative.

The information shared is some of the most up-to-date that I have found and it is because of this that I would highly recommend it. The comparisons dispensed throughout the pages give the reader a new view of the world and how the United States interacts with it.

A Must Read

Mapping the Myths and Truths of the United States is a must read--or, rather must see. There is so much stunning (yes), thoughtful, information in each two-page spread. The book made me think of the best museum signage in the world. How do you make complex information/analysis accessible in just a few sentences? How do you make what could be considered really specialized `knowledge' accessible to an audience of diverse backgrounds and interests.

Whether Enloe and Seager's book is left on the cocktail table for sharing or in the bathroom for private pondering, it will leave you thinking and wondering and wanting to talk. The Real State of America Atlas is an important book for all of us who care about community, our country, and U.S. influence and impact on the world.

Great Graphics, Mediocre Narrative

First, let me explain why I like this atlas.

The data is great. A lot of very useful and illuminating information is packed into this slim volume. From personal experience I can vouch that the authors are working with top-notch sources for their graphics, although I wish that they would cite them more clearly.

The graphical presentation is also superb: very colorful, very creative and very engaging.

Now, the downsides.

The accompanying text is not top-quality. This is not to quibble with the authors' politics (Enloe in particular has written much on the intersection of international politics, militarism and feminism). Rather, the writing itself leaves much to be desired, especially in its overuse of "scare quotes" around every other "word". In addition, the text often makes sweeping generalizations that would seem to obscure, rather than to illuminate, the real state of America (examples such as "Americans eat big" and "Americans live, breathe and sleep sports"). Often this text is actually fact-devoid: for example, there is an infobox in the Native American section (you can see it in the preview) about the use of Native American Indian terms by school-based and professional sports teams, while not mentioning the numbers, the trend line, or acknowledging that some usages are sanctioned by affected Native Nations.

An additional issue is with the maps: often an abstract map of the United States is used in the graphics (to demonstrate obesity rates by state, say). This style of map shows each state as essentially a block floating in space, not connected to the other states. Given the small size of the volume, this type of abstract map means that while you can easily tell what's going on in California or Texas, it is very difficult to say the same for Connecticut, Rhode Island, or Maryland.

Overall, it's a good reference book, very nice to flip through. It's a nice supplement, but I would hesitate using it as a primary source for learning about the current shape of the United States, especially for understanding the data presented; I would recommend Cheryl Russell's well-written "Bet You Didn't Know: Hundreds of Intriguing Facts About Living in the USA" instead for that (although this work does not cover military and international issues as well).
