Robin Hobb is the author of the Farseer Trilogy, the Liveship Traders Trilogy, the Tawny Man Trilogy, the Soldier Son Trilogy, and the Rain Wilds Chronicles. She has also written as Megan Lindholm. She is a native of Washington State.

Getting substance and depth, a clear step above the first volume!

Although I bought this second volume in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy quite a while ago, I only came to read it very recently. And enjoyed it unreservedly! While the novel builds upon the universe Hobb created in the liveship traders trilogy (forget the second trilogy!) and the Assassin and Fool trilogies, the story is compelling enough to bring out excitement and longing for further adventures of Fitz and the Fool. Many characters that were introduced in the earlier volume suddenly take on substance and meaning, while the main characters are no longer heroes of past eras, but also acquire further depth and subtlety. Even long-lasting ones like Chade. I cannot tell whether this new dimension of the plights affecting the Six Duchies and its ruler, King Verity, was conceived from the start or came later to the author, but it really fits seamlessly and increases by several orders of magnitude the epic feeling of the creation.

Although it is hard to rank this book against the very first ones, like Royal Assassin, I feel this is truly one of the best of Hobb’s books, with the right mixture of action, plotting, missed opportunities and ambiguous angles about the main characters. So many characters truly come to life in this volume that I bemoan the sluggish pace of the first one even more now. While one could see Fool’s Quest as the fourteenth book in the Realm of the Elderlings series, and hence hint at senseless exploitation of the same saga, there are just too many new threads and perspective there to maintain this posture. A wonderful book and a rarity of a middle book being so. I am clearly looking forward the third instalment!

Finally!

I admit I might be a bit (a lot) biased about this book. Farseer is one of my favorite fantasy series ever. I understand some people thinking this book a bit slow, in some way I agree. Still, I just love it. I think this was a step up from the first book in the Fitz and the fool series (Although I really liked the first as well). It is more going on, and we are starting to see the outline of the full story. I would not recommend this book if you have not red the previous installments. I guess it could work as a standalone series, but I think what made me love it so much is that I really feel like I know the characters from before. Hobbs writing and characters are really good, as always, and also she is writing loooooong books. So they will not end right away. Already preordered the next book!

Tears, love, and laughter

I am fighting to not give the plot away as I think how to express my admiration for this work of art. Several different series come together as all seem ready to find one stunning conclusion. The reader gets to see Reyn and Malta again and learn about their son and his ongoing challenges. We get to see the Fool, Lord Golden, Amber, and Beloved. And little Bee is facing challenges beyond what most mortals can bear. And ALL of this pales in comparison to what we learn about the Royal Assassin. I cried. I laughed. I enjoyed this particular read more than any other book I've ever read. I could only wish that I could someday touch the hearts of my readers as Robin Hobb has touched mine.

Coming from a real language? This book is your best bet.

There is a line from Lion King where little Simba comments on his Uncle Scar's weirdness. Scar replies "You have no idea."

The main point of this review is that Javascript is a really weird contraption, and that this book points this out in a way that is very helpful for programmers coming from more traditional compiled programming languages.

I have programmed in C, C++, Java, C# for many years. I have read other books on Javascript which tried to teach by examples. With normal programming languages, this works fine. However, within a few hours with this book I realized that to understand Javascript, you must give up on some basic expectations you may have as a code developer. This was a surprise to me, but crucial to be able to learn Javascript well enough to work on non-trivial projects with existing code.

Javascript is simply bizarre. There are many different ways to implement object-oriented patterns which all use different-looking code, and have subtle differences, making it so easy to get bitten by unintended consequences. From this book I learned that there is no one solid way to implement the basic pattern of your code, you must make a choice.

If you try to read a Javascript book which teaches by examples, you will be in trouble when you actually start to modify someone else's Javascript code which used a different pattern. This book doesn't just show trivial examples, it methodically goes through how it works in enough detail so you can understand how it is working under the hood.

Also, the text has plenty of warnings about buggy implementations and common pitfalls. After you get about 1/4 of the way through it you will be wondering how any Javascript code runs on Internet Explorer at all, since about every other page is another 'this-is-broken-in-IE' warning boxes.

The text is written in a very clear style, never glossing over anything. It isn't at all cute or made to be entertaining, just kind of down to business.

There is no question I will be using this book nearly every time I have to work on Javascript code.

If you are just looking to make a little mouse button handler in a web page, this is probably not the book for you. It does not jump right into little useful examples.

If you are coming from a programming background in traditional compiled languages, and you want to know more about Javascript than little tiny scripts, IMHO this book is absolutely necessary. You will never regret purchasing it.

Long but so is the topic

I usually get turned of by books this big as I assume they are badly edited. However, before this I read many books on JavaScript and while I learnt a lot from each one I never quite got my head around the more complicated parts of the language such as inheritance until reading this book. Zaka's just explains everything really well, though don't interpret that as meaning at length, I think his chapters are more the natural length of the topics they describe. Not condensed down to 'seem' friendly as in "The Good Parts".
This is the book which finally got me comfortable with the core language, though it also taught me a lot which I didn't expect to be taught or hadn't even heard of such as document fragments and many aspects of the browser API's. So while this book could have been a lot shorter by removing a lot of the stuff most people won't care about, I am glad the author kept them in as I found them interesting. Actually I wish the book was longer. And besides its well enough organised that you could simply skip to 'the good parts' and still end up with a better book than its restricted cousins.

User friendly

If you have already read the previous edition of this book, the reading of this third edition will bring you a lot of new stuffs. This book is not only a complete rewriting, but also a more deep explanation and a detailed presentation of HTML5 apis.
For me, "JavaScript for Web Developpers" is really really more user friendly than "Javascript, the definitive guide". Code samples are easy to understand (and don't spread across 3 or 4 pages). The style is simple and the writing is easily understood by a "non english native" like me.
The only thing I would change if I could is stripping out the 50 pages on XML and replacing them by more of advanced techniques.
Definitly a must-have.

Magical and touching

I loved this story. I loved its delicate hues - the light and the dark ones. I liked the idea of a homecoming. And I liked the fact that the title Lone Star had multiple meanings for it - even a final one being revealed in the very end of the story.

I was fascinated with Mitch: him being so control freak and workaholic, his memories about his youth and his troubled relationship with his father... and the nostalgic feel of him meeting all these people who used to mean so much to him. I had all these motherly feelings towards him, because I felt he needed to be saved - and fast. What can I say? Josh Lanyon captured Mitch's obsession with his work and career as a ballet dancer perfectly.

In the end the story left me thinking about the second chances we too rarely get. It happened with Mitch and Web, but not with Mitch and his father. There was a slightly sad undertone to this story - and maybe a lesson to learn? I kept thinking how hasty actions and decisions that appear so small and innocent at the time can have a huge effect to the person's future. That is scary for real. I'm afraid I recognize some of my own traits in Mitch, temper and workaholism not being the nicest ones.

I became very fond of Mitch right from the start, but in the end it was Web who really warmed my heart. His love for Mitch was so solid and sure. And the way he petted Mitch and took care of him... it was adorable. And it was fascinating to notice the point when Web clearly decided not to let Mitch go for the second time.

I'm beginning to see that Josh Lanyon writes my favorite Christmas stories. This one was beautiful and touching. And it's always nice to have a small mystery in a Christmas story - magically appearing and disappearing reindeer in this case. Bonus points for that magical touch! ;)

Romantic and sweet

Having lived in Oklahoma for several years, and having a partner who is from Texas, I have a great affection for that part of the country. That is partly why I especially enjoyed this story. It is a little short, of course, and I would have loved for it to have been longer. Even so, it is a romantic and sweet story, with characters I could relate to and care about. I had to read it all the way through in one sitting.

this is the first lanyon book i read and i dug it. he doesn't hand everything to you. the reindeer thing for example you get on your own. it also wasn't overloaded with sex. i'm already planning on buying his book on writing as soon as i can and i want to read more of his stuff. i hope he continues to be as enjoyable in his other stories as this.
