The first P-38s became operational with the 1st Fighter Group in April 1941, and the initial combat deployments were made in Alaska, the Southwest Pacific and North Africa during the latter part of 1942. Photographic reconnaissance versions of the P-38 were in action even sooner when F-4 (P-38E) models were rushed to frontline units a few months after Pearl Harbor. Every theatre in which the United States was involved saw deployment of the P-38, and more than 60 Lightning pilots were credited with at least five victories by the end of 1943. Some of the early aces to be featured are photo-reconnaissance ace Karl Polifka, who supposedly scored some of the first unofficial P-38 aerial victories in the period April through August 1942, and 39th Fighter Squadron aces Charles King, Dick Bong and Hoyt Eason, who scored some of the first victories for the squadron. Some of the aces of the Mediterranean were 37th FS pilots Leverette, Wilkins and Hanna, who flew older G-models during the period when the celebrated Stuka shootdown took place in October 1943. New information and insight on this operation, including the identity of some of the German participants, is now available. About the Author
Coming from a long line of authors (including George Mellinger, who wrote several bestselling Osprey titles) that belonged to the Twin Cities Aero Historians organisation, John Stanaway has written more than 20 books and scores of articles. A USAF veteran with an Arc Light temporary duty assignment to his name from the Vietnam War, Stanaway and his wife have travelled the entire breadth of the United States from California to their present location in Zanesville, Ohio, with their border terrier "Gloster Gladiator" and black Labrador/terrier mix "Bristol Beaufighter." The author lives in Zanesville, OH.

Lightning Tales!

Thus far Osprey has covered the exploits of P-38 aces/units in a number of titles: P-38 LIGHTNING ACES OF THE PACIFIC AND CBI, P-38 LIGHTNING ACES OF THE ETO/MTO, P-38 ACES OF THE 82ND FIGHTER GROUP, 475TH FIGHTER GROUP, etc. John Stanaway recounts the P-38 aces story but in a chronological narrative in P-38 LIGHTNING ACES, 1942-43. A 2014 Osprey release, Stanaway's book is #120 in their AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES series.

After a brief introduction to 'Lockheed's Hot Rod,' Stanway relates P-38 combat ops in the Pacific, CBI, MTO and ETO. When flown by skilled pilots like Danny Roberts, Murray Shubin, Dick Bong, John Mitchell, Bob Westbrook, John O'Neill, Bill Sloan, Jack Ilfrey and Tom McGuire, the P-38 spelled trouble for their German, Japanese and Italian opponents as borne out by Stanaway's exciting narative. The text is complimented by dozens of photographs of pilots and Lightnings along with 13 pages of gorgeous color profiles including three pages of P-38 nose art by Chris Davey.

Since the P-38 story has been told many times, much of the material and pix in P-38 LIGHTNING ACES, 1942-43 will be familiar to long-time Lightning buffs. However, as a stand-alone chronicle of early-war P-38 ops, Stanaway's book makes for entertaining reading. Recommended.

The dawn of the P-38

The OSPREY's AIRCRAF OF THE ACES series has now reached the 120th title and is more lively than ever.
Since the beginning Author Peter Stanaway hits the target of telling a very interesting and faceted story.
He underlines the high value of innovation enclosed in the P-38 LIGHTNING and its qualities, particularly the incredible range and the highly destructive power of its armament. The book treats the P-38's American aces fighting since the beginning to 1943 in all operational theatres, during which they operated the E, F, G and H variants.
Notwithstanding some teething troubles of these models, 60 USAAF pilots (including the "legends of the air" Tom Mc Guire and Dick Bong) became aces, courtesy to the "fork tailed devil".
The chapters are developing through the years, starting from the Pacific TO, tracing the hard fighting in the skies of Rabaul, Guadalcanal and New Guinea. Very well written is the chapter devoted to the bold "Vengeance" operation, the interception and downing of the Japanese plane that was carrying Adm. Yamamoto.
The P-38 saw other first line fighting in Burma, China and India and also here was successful, even against the effective Nakajima Ki-44 "Tojo".
However the North Africa and Mediterranean fronts were quite problematic.
There the USAAF pilots had to fight against the well trained and resolute Italian and German pilots, particularly the veteran ones at the controls of the superb Italian MC.202s and German Bf. 109Gs. For this reason the USAAF's victories were mainly based on the slow and vulnerable Junkers Ju.87 Stuka dive bombers.
A not so known and peculiar anecdote told by the Author is that the turbocharged Allison engines of the P-38 induced false victories reports: due to the vigorous backfires after a full throttle acceleration, the P-38 left dense and black trail of smokes and flames, very deceptive for an hit target.
The last chapter describes the P-38 debut in the "Mighty 8th" ranks. This was the most critical theatre, not only for the ability of the Lufwaffe's "Experten" pilots but especially for the ineffective USAAF tactics, quickly revised on the basis of the disappointing results.
A wonderful integration to the book is the collection of the Davey's profiles.
These 30 work of art and the related nose arts are all drawn with the aerograph (Davey is one of the last artists still linked to this beautiful and skill requiring technique), a technique perfectly suited to the WW II camouflages.

For any aviation enthusiast - especially one who is a fan of the P-38 Lightning as I am - this is a book that provides a rich and compelling account of the airplane's combat record in the Pacific, the China-Burma-India Theater, North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Northern Europe during 1942 and 1943. What's more: the photos and art work are top quality and show the P-38 to fine effect. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK.

I really like this book

I bought this book because everyone mention it. I read it a little, tried some exercises, i saw the potential in it but i wasn't playing jazz or even with a band at the moment. Then a month ago i started playing in a jazz ensamble band and this book is saving me, the cds are a big plus and is not necessary to listen it every time, just at the beginning so you have a good idea of how the thing is suposed to sound...once you can replicate the sound, the book and your practice time will do wonders with your coordination and subdivision awarenes. After some little time i can even do the cymbal patterns with the left hand. This book is simple and powerfull, wich in general is a great combo. What i like about this and Chester book is that they take into acount the whole drumset, not just rudiments for the snare wich i wont say they are a waste of time but is just secondary stuff...i mean, just by knowing singles, doubles, flams taps and just to count and group in 3 5 7 etc is enough to experiment and do amazing things. Tommy Igoe's great hands for a lifetime is a cool example of just a few "must know" rudiments and concepts that wont overwelm you. I talked to much, bye!
One more thing, even if hand writen, the notes are big and very clear (to me), they make part of the magic of this book imo.

Great Tool for becomming a Great Drummer!...

Many top names in music have used his book...one of my instructors got me into this book years ago and I recently puchased it again after giving away my previous copy. This edition comes with a CD of Jim Chapin playing the patterns as they are written. If you need help in getting started, find an instructor in your area who can help you play these patterns. I found it very, very useful for keeping time while being able to develop my own creative expression. You can do it too...a little effort with this book will help you grow into becomming a mature musician. Also, check out another great book for developing independence and coordination: Gary Chester's, The New Breed.

Critical for the jazz drummer

This is THE go-to book for getting basic to advanced jazz limb independence going for the jazz drummer. Recommended by my drum teacher, I've been studying this book for over a year now, and it still reveals new and useful things to me. This advanced my drumming by leaps and bounds. I do recommend working with an instructor while using the book, though.

I am reading the fantastic new Grateful Dead book Dead Heads by Linda Kelly. The interviews are amazing. All kinds of regular nondescript Deadheads and their stories. One about going to Bill Grahams house for Christmas dinner and meeting Jerry and his entire family just months after his coma. Another about cooking Cajun at Bob's house and a detail account of Bobs mountain bike accident by the only eye-witness. This book will last way past all others in its relevancy. Thank you Linda.

Vladislava Stoyanova is a postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Law, Lunds Universitet, Sweden. She is a lecturer in Migration Law and Human Rights Law and the director of the Migration Law course. She has published extensively in the field of human trafficking, slavery, migration law, refugee law and human rights law, and is an expert in Bulgarian migration and refugee law.

By analysing the simulation data, an investigator can determine noise generation mechanisms and sound propagation processes. No prior knowledge of numerical methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) is needed, however, a general understanding of partial differential equations and basic numerical analysis is assumed. Exercises are included and are designed to be an integral part of the chapter content. In addition, sample computer programs are included to illustrate the implementation of the numerical algorithms.

About the Author
Dr Christopher Tam is the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Florida State University. His research in computational mathematics and numerical simulation involves the development of low dispersion and dissipation computation schemes, numerical boundary conditions and the mathematical analysis of the scheme's computational properties for use in large scale numerical simulation of a number of real-world problems. Additionally he is developing jet and other aircraft noise theories as well as prediction codes for NASA and the US aircraft industry's noise reduction effort.

About the Author
Dr. Jack Kapoor is a Professor of Business and Economics in the Business and Services Division. Dr. Kapoor has taught Business and Economics at College of DuPage since 1969. He received his B.A. and M.S. from San Francisco State College and his Ed.D. from Northern Illinois University. Professor Kapoor was recently awarded the Business and Services Division's Outstanding Professor Award for 1999-2000. Irwin/McGraw-Hill).

In addition to writing several textbooks, Dr. Hughes has taught personal finance, introduction to business, business math, small business management, small business finance, and accounting since 1972. He also served as a content consultant for two popular national television series, It's Strictly Business and Dollars & Sense: Personal Finance for the 21st Century, and is the lead author for a business math project utilizing computer-assisted instruction funded by the ALEKS Corporation. He received his BBA from Southern Nazarene University and his MBA and EdD from the University of North Texas. His hobbies include writing, investing, collecting French antiques, art, and travel.

Les Dlabay teaches in the Department of Economics and Business at Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois. Over the past 25 years, he has taught more than 30 different courses in high school, community college, university, adult education, and teacher preparation programs. Dr. Dlabay has developed a wide variety of textbook materials, student activity guides, instructor manuals, testing programs, audio-visual materials, and software packages in the areas of Personal Finance, Consumer Economics, and International Business. Dr. Dlabay has served as a consultant to corporations, educational institutions, and government agencies. He has presented more than 140 workshops and seminars in over 20 states to encourage teachers to actively involve students in the learning process with video presentations, newsletters, interviews, and Internet research activities.

I'm Actually Buying it for My Own Personal Reading

I was assigned this book in my Financial Literacy course at school. My professor was amazing (shout out to Framingham State!) and this book was part of my success in that class. I'll be the first to say I don't like math, like at all. Give me a Humanities class any day. But it's really important, especially as young people, to get a handle on money management early. The formulas are explained very well, I learned a lot that helped my real-life decision-making, and it's packed full of a ton of knowledge. Rented it at first then came back to buy it.

Do you want to learn how to make money?

Jack Kapoor has written this book in a way that really captures your attention.
This book is great for beginners and teaches you the basics of how the stock market works.
It is a good way to begin learning the terms and meanings of many technical terms they
use in the stock market. You have come to the right place if you are wanting to learn how to invest.

-easy read
-lots of valuable information
-great book for beginners at investing
-you will learn all of the basics

I took Finance 101 at UNLV and they required me to purchase this book. Buying books at the campus
bookstore is really not the right thing to do. It is way too expensive compared with the price you can get
it on here. Not only did I learn a lot from taking this class and reading this book, it had made me
completely change my whole major. This book is great!

It is too bad that our country's educational system does not REQUIRE high ...

It is too bad that our country's educational system does not REQUIRE high school seniors to take a course that includes material found in this book. I used this book as an elective class in college. I learned a lot about the things I need to decide for myself with not just my finances, but all the things life will force you to decide on how to spend your finances. Things like life insurance, car insurance, home mortgages, renting vs. buying, etc...

This is the kind of book you should buy if you are a young adult struggling to make sense with the many options in life.
